Those mods are the product of dedicated communities of fans and players, and what follows are some of the most active ones we have today. And there is no denying that some of the more recent games like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V have thrived as much as they have on the back of mods. Early examples include Valve's Team Fortress, which was originally a Quake mod back in the day, and Counter-Strike, which was a Half-Life mod.

These user-created modifications run the gamut from performance-enhancing to purely hilarious. With nearly every major release, you can be certain that there will be a dedicated subset of fans just waiting to alter the game in some way, shape, or form.
